Flash Ban! Speed Ban! BOING BOING BAN!

🇮🇹 Italiano

🇬🇧 English

Given the recent uproar following the release of the new uncommon legendary creature: “Speedball, New Warrior”.

We decided to monitor its performance across various online Pauper Commander communities… And the consensus was almost unanimous: Having it in the Command Zone is devastating.

Technical Issues in the Format

  • Zero-Cost Redirection: Its ability is an on-cast trigger with no mana cost. It completely flips tempo: every opposing spot removal turns into an asymmetric 2-for-1 in favor of the Speedball player.
  • Collapse of Removal Spells: The format relies heavily on a wide variety of interactions, many of which are single-target (Cast Down, Lightning Bolt, etc.) due to the scarcity of efficient common board wipes. Speedball renders spot removal completely useless, becoming a rogue threat regardless of the deck it faces.
  • Unlimited Voltron Engine: With no trigger limits per turn, it serves as both free protection and a permanent stat buff with every interaction. Consequently, any burn spell or targeted effect effectively adds “+2/+2” to the commander.
  • Overly Specific Answers: It is only kept in check by extremely specific answers such as edict effects, counterspells, or enchantments that exile upon entering the battlefield. This makes it overwhelmingly powerful in too many matchups.

Conclusion

Speedball actively punishes healthy interaction; therefore, we have decided to ban it.

We will keep it under observation and consider a future unban. But that future is not today.
